Eyes Tutorial
Step #1 Here are the tools to start with. You will need a white clay (I use white Fimo soft), The paints you will be painting your eyes, a VERY small black pen (I used a rapidograph pen), small paint brushes of course, black Tandy leather thread, and x-acto knife for cleaning, and a polymer super gloss like Sculpey high gloss.
Step #1
Step #2 Roll out a small ball of clay
Step #2
Step #3 Cut it in half and try to make it around the size you need.
Step #3
Step #4 Here I have made these about 1 cm
Step #4
Step #5 Here I made an indent using the blunt end of a paint brush.
Step #5
Step #6 This is how it looks.
Step #6
Step #7 I start to sculpt the insides in a sort of twisted slant.
Step #7
Step #8 Here's a better view.
Step #8
Step #9 After I finish... I cut my black leather strip.
Step #9
Step #10 I poke the strip in from the backend. Try to make it centered!
Step #10
Step #11 What it looks like...
Step #11
Step #12 Now start to roll and shape your eye a bit to get it back down to your 1cm size. Be gentle and careful!
Step #12
Step #13 What mine looks like after being beat up!
Step #13
Step #14 LIGHTLY re poke with your paint brush end... to get the roundness of the iris back. LIGHTLY so your sculpting marks are not taken away!!
Step #14
Step #15 This is the eye done! Remember to try to do the other eye at the same time and match them! Now you can bake... I do not let it bake for too long since it is so small, but try to follow the manufacturer's directions!
Step #15
Step #16 After baking and cooling down... I whip out the rapidograph pen!
Step #16
Step #17 I outline the circle... without stressing over perfection.. do not worry if you accidently make a mistake!
Step #17
Step #18 I also darken the leather pupil with the pen.
Step #18
Step #19 Now I draw some lines in the crevices that I sculpted... all of the little twisted slits.
Step #19
Step #20 Here I've painted the eyes! I used a dark blue paint for the base, then used a much lighter blue for the area nearest the pupil. I used a dry paintbrush to extract some paint from the dark areas I marked with the pen. As you can tell... it didn't work too well, but the eye looks pretty nice, so I'll keep it this way.
Step #20
Step #21 Another view!
Step #21
Step #22 Now, once everything is dry, take your x-acto knife and scrape your edges to clean it up, and make it look more perfectly round.
Step #22
Step #23 Get out the gloss! I have found that when I use the head end of a metal tweezer, the gloss drips really nicely and also spreads the gloss around the eye without making a mess!
Step #23
Step #24 Here is the eye finished with gloss and a view from the side... you see the slight mound?
Step #24
Step #25 Here is a not so good picture of the blue eyes... but keep looking down.. I have better pictures!
Step #25
Step #26 Ok... here I am taking the x-acto knife again and cutting the backside of the eye off! I do this because it will fit into my doll head better with the way I sculpt... you do not have to do this.
Step #26
Step #27 Here's what it looks like cut.
Step #27
Step #28 Topside.
Step #28
Step #29 Finished eyes! They are squished onto some raw clay to hold them.
Step #29
Step #30 Here's my green eyes that I made and put into my Ipotane child doll!
You can see the finished doll here.
Step #30
