| Eyes Tutorial |
 | |
Here are the tools to start with. You will need a white clay (I use white Fimo soft), The paints you will be painting your eyes, a VERY small black pen (I used a rapidograph pen), small paint brushes of course, black Tandy leather thread, and x-acto knife for cleaning, and a polymer super gloss like Sculpey high gloss.
| |
Step #1 | |
| |
 | |
Roll out a small ball of clay
| |
Step #2 | |
| |
 | |
Cut it in half and try to make it around the size you need.
| |
Step #3 | |
| |
 | |
Here I have made these about 1 cm
| |
Step #4 | |
| |
 | |
Here I made an indent using the blunt end of a paint brush.
| |
Step #5 | |
| |
 | |
This is how it looks.
| |
Step #6 | |
| |
 | |
I start to sculpt the insides in a sort of twisted slant.
| |
Step #7 | |
| |
 | |
Here's a better view.
| |
Step #8 | |
| |
 | |
After I finish... I cut my black leather strip.
| |
Step #9 | |
| |
 | |
I poke the strip in from the backend. Try to make it centered!
| |
Step #10 | |
| |
 | |
What it looks like...
| |
Step #11 | |
| |
 | |
Now start to roll and shape your eye a bit to get it back down to your 1cm size. Be gentle and careful!
| |
Step #12 | |
| |
 | |
What mine looks like after being beat up!
| |
Step #13 | |
| |
 | |
LIGHTLY re poke with your paint brush end... to get the roundness of the iris back. LIGHTLY so your sculpting marks are not taken away!!
| |
Step #14 | |
| |
 | |
This is the eye done! Remember to try to do the other eye at the same time and match them! Now you can bake... I do not let it bake for too long since it is so small, but try to follow the manufacturer's directions!
| |
Step #15 | |
| |
 | |
After baking and cooling down... I whip out the rapidograph pen!
| |
Step #16 | |
| |
 | |
I outline the circle... without stressing over perfection.. do not worry if you accidently make a mistake!
| |
Step #17 | |
| |
 | |
I also darken the leather pupil with the pen.
| |
Step #18 | |
| |
 | |
Now I draw some lines in the crevices that I sculpted... all of the little twisted slits.
| |
Step #19 | |
| |
 | |
Here I've painted the eyes! I used a dark blue paint for the base, then used a much lighter blue for the area nearest the pupil. I used a dry paintbrush to extract some paint from the dark areas I marked with the pen. As you can tell... it didn't work too well, but the eye looks pretty nice, so I'll keep it this way.
| |
Step #20 | |
| |
 | |
Another view!
| |
Step #21 | |
| |
 | |
Now, once everything is dry, take your x-acto knife and scrape your edges to clean it up, and make it look more perfectly round.
| |
Step #22 | |
| |
 | |
Get out the gloss! I have found that when I use the head end of a metal tweezer, the gloss drips really nicely and also spreads the gloss around the eye without making a mess!
| |
Step #23 | |
| |
 | |
Here is the eye finished with gloss and a view from the side... you see the slight mound?
| |
Step #24 | |
| |
 | |
Here is a not so good picture of the blue eyes... but keep looking down.. I have better pictures!
| |
Step #25 | |
| |
 | |
Ok... here I am taking the x-acto knife again and cutting the backside of the eye off! I do this because it will fit into my doll head better with the way I sculpt... you do not have to do this.
| |
Step #26 | |
| |
 | |
Here's what it looks like cut.
| |
Step #27 | |
| |
 | |
Topside.
| |
Step #28 | |
| |
 | |
Finished eyes! They are squished onto some raw clay to hold them.
| |
Step #29 | |
| |
 | |
Here's my green eyes that I made and put into my Ipotane child doll! You can see the finished doll here.
| |
Step #30 | |
| |
